AMETEK DFS and Wayne Taylor Racing: Partnering on the Track

AMETEK Dynamic Fluid Solutions (DFS) is a leading manufacturer of blowers, motors, pumps and fans. Wayne Taylor Racing (WTR) is an internationally recognized championship winning sports car racing team that competes in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Prototype class.

At first glance, the two entities would seem to have little room for overlap. But an AMETEK DFS component has made an important contribution to WTR’s racing effort.

As co-drivers Filipe Albuquerque and Ricky Taylor demonstrate in the video above, WTR has found a unique way to use the AMETEK Microjammer® blower to pump air into the driver's helmet, keeping the drivers cool during the race.

The temperature inside the cockpit at times is 15° F hotter than the temperature outside. Given that, during the endurance races, the driver can be operating the car for up to three hours at a time wearing a suit (which is equivalent to long underwear and snow suit), it’s clear this cooling system can be a game changer for comfort, safety — and even a competitive edge.

The Microjammer® attaches to the racecar and flows air to the racer’s helmet with lightweight tubing that doesn’t impair the driver’s mobility. It generates strong, steady airflow with minimal noise. In the video above, Wayne Taylor Racing’s Ricky Taylor highlights the importance of an effective cooling device that doesn’t add excess weight. “Over the course of 24 hours, we are doing a lot of driver changes, and everything on the car needs to be really lightweight for speed and reliability because we need the car to be as fast as possible.”

AMETEK DFS plays a role in keeping drivers cool during the long and exhausting races. Both drivers and teams perform better as a result. Ricky Taylor also emphasizes in the video how important the Microjammer® blower’s role is to the team's success. “If we are able to stay cool for 24 hours, we can focus on our jobs and do the best we can to keep the car on the track and go as fast as possible,” the two-time IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Champion further explains.

Sportscar racing is the latest industry in a long line of others to benefit from the successful application of AMETEK DFS products. AMETEK DFS is very excited to watch as WTR takes many checkered flags in future – knowing that our Microjammer® blower is playing a small part in their victories!
